As days shrink and the rains begin, starlings arrive in greater numbers to mark the year’s closing weeks. Rising from the trees, fields and valley nooks, they take to the skies in massive flocks and astound witnesses with their acrobatic feats. Thousands fan out in waves over Kunde Family Estate vineyards in Kenwood, shimmering from the light reflected off white spots on the birds’ winter coats. Originally imported from Europe in the 1890s, starlings make Sonoma County their year-round home. Their numbers grow exponentially this time of year as local flocks are joined by others that are fleeing winter weather to the north and the east.
