Rohnert Park's mystery balloon

A Rohnert Park resident said a hot air balloon crash landed in her neighborhood Saturday afternoon near Copeland Creek, and that it was possibly the same balloon that made an emergency landing in Lady Bug Park last summer.

The hot air balloon, which was black with blue, green, red and yellow shapes, came down into Copeland Creek about 3:30 p.m. before it rose back up with a gash on its side, said Sienna Hornback, who lives in the area.

Hornback said she, her husband, Paul, their kids, dog and three neighborhood kids went chasing the balloon when it looked like it was going to crash. They ran through Colegio Vista Park when the balloon all but disappeared amid the trees that line the creek. She said only the top of the balloon was visible.

“He dipped down into the creek area, and rose up again with a big gash in the side of the balloon. And then it drifted a little bit and came down for good,” she said.

Last June, a balloon like the one she saw today “crash landed” in Lady Bug Park, almost her backyard, she said.

A Rohnert Park Public Safety dispatcher said Saturday afternoon that the balloon took off as emergency units arrived to its location.

The name of the pilot or balloon company was not available.
