A new study reveals what women want—a helpful man

Dating is a game. And unless you’re winning, chances are you’re sick of playing. But a new study says there’s a reason (and a pretty good one) women play hard to get.

Researchers from the University of Bristol in the U.K. found that the more coy women are, the more helpful men will be. Women play hard to get to see how you’ll behave in different situations. Then they evaluate how willing you would be to help a potential mate in the future.

The technique works best when there is a large number of males to choose from and a mixture of helpful and unhelpful men, according to the study.

So if you want to land your dream girl, shore up your competitive side and prove you’re more worthy than the rest. If she acts uninterested at first, it only means she likes you enough to test your support.

But in the meantime, there’s no harm in upping your chances. Invite her over for dinner, and impress her with a home-cooked meal. Or study the things all women wish men knew to convince her you’re the perfect guy for her.

If she continues sending mixed signals, don’t worry—another new study says time is on your side. Swedish researchers confirmed that women prefer older men. So whether you stay in the dating game or hang out on the sidelines, science says you’ll eventually get the girl—and you can’t argue with science
